What should you expect on your first acupuncture visit?
Your first visit will begin with an in depth assessment of your condition and an initial treatment. The first visit will typically last
1 hour to 1 1/2 hours. Typical visits afterwards last approximately 45 minutes.
During the assessment your acupuncturist may ask you about some things that you might not think are connected to your chief complaint, for example, your emotions, your bowel patterns, sleeping patterns, and eating habits. Chinese medicine considers the whole person, not just one isolated symptom. When put together, the myriad of symptoms and signs you are experiencing reveal patterns of disharmony. Although treatment will focus on your chief complaint, your whole being must be considered in order to develop the most appropriate course of treatment. Chinese medicine is unique in that it appreciates that illnesses may be identical, but the persons suffering from them are individuals.
How can you get the most benefit from your treatment?
To enhance the effectiveness of your treatment, the following guidelines are useful:
Before your treatments:
· Do not eat an unusually large meal.
· Do not receive acupuncture on an empty stomach. Eat something small or average portioned within 1 hour prior to you treatment.
· Do not over-exercise, engage in sexual activity, or consume alcoholic beverages within 6 hours of your treatment.
· Write down any questions that come to your mind between treatments.
· Continue taking your prescription medications as directed by your regular doctor. Substance abuse (drugs and alcohol), especially in the week prior to treatment will seriously interfere with the effectiveness of acupuncture treatments.
After your treatments:
· Do not eat an unusually large meal. Stick with small or average portioned meals for the first few hours following your session.
· Do not over-exercise, engage in sexual activity, or consume alcoholic beverages for up to 6 hours after your treatment.
· Plan your activities so that after the treatment you can get some rest, or at least not have to be working at top performance. This is especially important for the first few visits.
· Continue taking any prescription medicines as directed by your regular doctor. Substance abuse (drugs or alcohol) will seriously interfere with the effectiveness of acupuncture treatments.
Remember to keep good mental or written notes of your response to the treatment. This is important for your acupuncturist to know so that the follow-up treatments can be designed to best help you and your problem.
